Just a simple question as I have not treated kids before now. The client is a 12 year old girl who was a excellent at sports but now cannot perform" at all. Her mother contacted me for help. Does the mother need to be present in the actual sessions? Thanks!

Hi Gouri Its usually recommended that a parent or older person be present in order to protect yourself from any potential allegations, however I often find parents trying to answer questions on behalf of their child and its important that this be discouraged so that you can listen to the childs concerns. If you have a waiting room where the adult could sit (within earshot) then you could try recording the session. Its highly unlikely that any allegations should crop up but you never know. This is especially important where a male therapist is treating a female child or vise versa.

Treating children is a minefield. I always have the parent or guardian sign a consent form. I do respect the child and ask if they want the parent to be present, I explain that either is acceptable and that regardless of their choices the parent or my assistant will be near. I always record all my sessions, I will always record even when I have been asked not to! The dynamics of a parent present can change the outcome of the session, you dont know if maybe in this case the child is underperforming because they no longer wish to take part but the parent is pushing them. There are a myriad of potential issues in this case. I dont need to tell you all of them but but bare in mind these couple. Pushy parent, bullying at home/club abuse home/club Tread carefully and cover your ass! Blunt but necessary.

Hello Gouri (and all others), Ive treated a few children now, and with great success. I speak with the parent on the phone before the session and guage the parent before they even reach my office. One approach Ive found to be quite successful is to have the parent and child in my office and give the parent a questionairre to fill out. This usually takes them a good 5-10 minutes. In which time I can be quite happily gaining rapport with the child, treating the child like an adult. And usually having quite an intelligent conversation. In this time I covertly ask questions to determine how the child would like me to help them. In the case that the child genuinly wants help to achieve something, I will tell the child exactly how I would help and show the techniques and ask if theyd like to try the techniques for themselves. However, If the child replies with a my mum wants me to be better at this or that, then its usually obvious that the parent is the one pushing for change. I will always insist a parent be present during sessions, and I will not use any script which has physical contact with the child, i.e. elmans arm drop deepening or any such rapid induction. I have had no problems so far with my child clients and as childrens imaginations are fantastic, Ive found that they need very few sessions to achieve the same results as an adult. I hope this helps in some way, or I may just be rambling. kind regards, and good luck Richard Scott Grey Matterz
