have been contacted by a lady who wants to help her partners depression. She wants to come and see me, but says her partner is unlikely to come. She has been through a stressful time as their relationship has gone from bad to worse as her partner is withdrawn, on edge and drinks heavily. He refuses to go to the Doctor for help. She is very stressed and not sleeping. How can I help this lady? Could I just offer HER therapy? Is there any way I can help her to persuade her partner to seek help?

Hi Gouri", The most important question I have found to be most useful to ask in most all occasions, is the question "Why?". I would be looking for answers to why is the Partner depressed. Why is the Partner not wanting to seek help for the depression. Is it any type of relief or is it just Therapeutic Hypnosis that the Partner doesnt want? Why has the depression worsened? Of course the only information that You will be able to obtain will be from the "Lady", and of course could be subjective at best from Her own observations and what Her Partner is willing to share with Her about. The Partners answers might be less that "honest" if She asks Him. She might not really know the answers to the "Why" questions. But at least that would be where I would start to begin to assess the situation to see if Hypno-therapy would be beneficial for the Partner. However, having said this, in the mean time I would definitely offer the "Lady" Sessions, since You already know the answers to the "Why" questions with Her. But I would work with Her on only one problem at a time. In Your post, You mentioned She was very "Stressed", "Couldnt Sleep at Night", . . .etc. During Your Sessions with Her You could teach Her some simple relaxation techniques to "Share" with Her Partner. If the Partner responds favorably, It is possible that through this the Partner might be convinced that You could help Him further. But always have Your Clients highest good and interest at heart,(First do No Harm) unless You are a Psychologist, always Know when refer them to one, preferably a Hypno-therapist that is also a Psychologist. You Clients will thank You for it. Good Luck to You & Your Clients. I wish You both the Best. M. Huff, Jr. CH
