My client has a problem in that she stopped smoking and constantly feels she needs something in her mouth - food, gum, mints, whatever. She knows that she didnt have this need when smoking, but cant get past this and consequently cant seem to lose weight. Have tried several weight loss therapies to no avail. Can anyone help?

Perhaps you could treat this issue as another habit" and help the client to access a "good strong positive feeling" which you can then anchor. Whenever the "craving/urge" to put something in her mouth crops up, you could remind her to rub thumb and finger together and these good feelings will be with her instantly. Goodbye craving. Usually works very well. Hope this is helpful. Regards Mary

Try anchoring cold refreshing water as the replacemnt for the mechanical action of the hand to mouth habit. I also have great success using the image of the Night Safe" the visualisation goes something like this, "As a smoker, you were controlled by those nicotine monsters. They caused you to do harm to your body, your health and even your appearance. (the appearance thing more important to female clients and often has a profound effect. They even had control over YOUR MONEY! Now I want you to visualise a strong box like the night safe at your bank. Once anything is put in there you never see it again. But anything put in there, adds to your bank balance. The very second a craving comes into your head, you will just open the chute to your night safe, your strong steel box and sweep those cravings in there never to be seen again. Now as a non-smoker you want to make sure that none of those little monsters are missed, so you will want to follow that up with a drink of cool refreshing water to wash away and even drown the really persistent ones. " Go on to extol the benefits of cool refreshing water and how avoiding dehydration helps the concentration etc. Also how banking the cravings turns into money that wasnt spent. I have found this particularly useful with clients that have failed a few days after giving up due to cravings. More and more Im weaving it into the initial session with great results
