Hello, I have a client who, since menopause, suffers from insomnia. She has had a single hypnosis session but found it almost impossible to let go into relaxation. I gave the lady a hypnotic relaxation CD to listen to for a few days and I have just had the report that she believes the situation has gotten worse. My client reported being totally unable to visualise anything, even visualising her own front room with her eyes closed was impossible. I determined that she related moreso to an auditory representation system as she could remember tunes, sounds and rhythms. I was about to creat a script which delivered auditory cues while having a rhythm, of sorts, playing in the background. However the client has decided that she sees no sense in continuing with hypnotherapy as no achievements have taken place so far. Has anyone else experienced similar experiences with their own clients? Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Richard

Hi Richard In situations like this (where clients are unable to relax or visualize) I have found that teaching them how to use autogenic programming can sometimes help - visualization is not necessary and they can use it on themselves to achieve relaxation. However if she has determined to discontinue the sessions then there is little that you can do for her. Had there been subsequent sessions I would have suggested finding out more about when her insomnia began. Was it the menopausal symptoms that triggered it or an anxiety about losing her ability to conceive or feeling that she was getting old or something else?

If she is menopausal the insomnia may also have a bases in estrogen levels so making sure she or went for a medical may of been of value. If someone cannot visualise, then leave it, ask them what their nothing looks like, work with what ever they do see, even if it is nothing. Self hypnosis may have been a solution for between sessions. Pam
