Hi all I have been giving counselling to a client for a few months now. She was involved in a car accident and is finding it difficult to cope, we have come a long way with her treatment but her confidence is very low. I asked her if she had considered hypnotherapy to help to increase her confidence, however, she is scared that she may not come out no matter how much i try to convince her that you dont go under she is still afraid. She thinks that hypnotherapy is what she has seen on the tv, the staged hypnosis. How would you try to convince her or is this just a lost cause?

Hi Maria Is there someone whom she might trust who has been successfully hypnotized who she could talk to? Maybe a past client would be happy for her to phone - hearing what hypnosis is like from someone else could set her mind at rest.

Hi Maria, 2 clients in my past have been very hesitant to use hypnotherapy. One of them ended up taking one of my CDs home with her to use, by herself in the safety and comfort of her own home first. That way I suggested if she falls asleep she will awaken in her own room, safe and sound. She came back the week after literally brimming with relaxed confidence. Went straight under hypnosis within minutes and never looked back. The second client, although fearing hypnosis, was quite open to a guided relaxation... do you see where Im going with this? "Im not going to hypnotise you... (in fairness we really dont hypnotise people, they do it all themselves)... but I want you to imagine this, visualise that, feel this, hear taste and smell that... etc. The client came out very relaxed, feeling much better and so we continued on this path. However covert that sounded, I hope the suggestions help in some way. Richard Scott

Why not describe to your client how she has been "in hypnosis" many times before, in fact each and every day! Every night before she goes to sleep she passes through alpha rhythm as the brain wave slows down, before delta and theta... sleep. That is the only place she can go, so enjoy! What about the time sat in front of the T.V. drifting, conscious mind pretty inactive- hypnosis. Listened to soothing classical music, drifting- hypnosis! Tell her to remember the stage shows carefully select their "victims" with a minor induction like "hand clasp" and if they are then willing to go on stage they are agreeing to act stupidly or do things they would not normally have the courage to do! They would never do anything actually against their moral code, but how many have secret desires which this may enable them to enact. Hypnosis is perfectly safe, I have used it for 40 years, relaxing, pleasant, effective. Tell her to go for it, or ring me for a free self hypnosis CD which she will love!!
