Hello, I understand the basic history of hypnosis as it is taught in classes and writen about in texts. But, I was wondering the opinion of the group members; who invented the modern day hypnosis that we practice it today. All your opinions, and/or theories are welcome. Im just curious as to where it all started. Sincerely, Dr. Alan Eastman http://www.TrafalgarDistance.com

Hi Alam I think hypnosis has actually evolved over the centuries - starting as far as we know, back in the age of the Ancient Egyptions but probably even further back than then to the beginning of humanity. One of the most influential modern day hypnotherapists was (as far as Im aware) Dr Milton Erickson but as with most subjects ideas change all the time. Even Erickson must have learnt his techniques from his predecessors. so its probably extremely difficult to pinpoint where it actually started. It would be nice to have some other peoples perspectives on this though.

Hi Dr. Eastman", What we call "Hypnosis" is a natural occurring phenomenon that humans shift into and out of everyday. Its happened ever since what we call "Humans" have being on the face of the Earth. When the conscious mind is so focused on an object, or a thought, or a remembered experience and that begins to be internalized to the point that everything else just fades into the background You have "Daydream by Design" or "Hypnotic Phenomenon. Or as the Great "Dave Elman" so Classically & Wonderfully put it, "When the critical faculty is bypassed, and selective thinking is established", You have Hypnosis. There were two men that actually pioneered the Field of what we call "Modern Hypno-therapy". These men were Absolute GENIUSES in understanding Hypnosis & its affect on the workings of the human mind. One of these men, as mentioned above, was Milton Erickson, and the Other was Dave Elman. Both of these men have made so much and many contributions to the Field of Hypnotic Therapeutics that their names will live on as long as the Practice of Hypnotherapy does. Both Dave Elman, and Milton Ericksons understanding was honed & Forged through the "fires of personal tragedy". Milton had polio and it paralyzed him to where he could only move his eyes and the only thing he would do all day long was watch the interaction between family members and other people. So his understanding of verbal and non-verbal communication and how it affected the internal workings of the human mind were learned while he was tied to a rocking chair outside on the porch watching his brothers and sister play. The Genius of Dave Elman was forged when as a young lad, remembering when a Hypnotist was called over to the Elman house to help Daves Dad, "Jake" gain control over his Cancer Pain through Hypnosis. Which was completely successful, because Jake was able to play with all his children one last time and his pain was quelled via Hypnosis. So the last memory Dave Elman had was his Father playing with Him for the last time via Hypnotic Pain Control. Erickson wrote many many books, and his followers wrote many many books, Elman wrote one Book and both have equal stature. From Ericksons followers came Ericksonian-Hypnosis, the Art of Indirect-Suggestion, Progressive-Relaxation, NLP, Covert & Conversational Hypnosis, Hypnosis w/ trance. Elmanian Hypnosis is still taught in its purest form and has not changed much at all. Its fast, quick, the techniques are impeccable, and in the hands of a skilled Operator, a state of "somnambulism" can be reached less than a minute. And a state of profound "somnambulism" in less than three. But because of the instant & rapid inductions made him(Dave) so famous, much of his other findings in Hypno-therapy are very much "over-looked"! His Therapeutic work is just as Fantastic as his Induction. There are tons of information on both of these Great Men on the internet. Dave Elmans book "Hypnotherapy" can be found on the DEHI website http://www.daveelmanhypnosisinstitute.com/ I hope and trust that I have somewhat helped in answering, at least in part, some Your question Dr. Eastman. Have a Great & Wonderful Day, M. Huff, Jr. CH
