I have a teenager who woke, 10 days ago, being unable to read/write letters/words. She has been to opthamologist. No eye problem. She is able to read music and numbers. She is awaiting consultation with a neurologist. Mum is anxious because she was a straight "A" student and is due to start her exams but this is causing problems. Has anyone encountered this? Can anyone advise?

I can only think it to be some severe adverse reaction to stress, perhaps over the exams. Ive never heard of spontaneously losing the ability to read before. But the music and numbers ability remaining makes the situation even more interesting. Can anyone else shed some light on the subject?

Hi Angela I agree with Richards suggestion that it could be stress related. I think that your client should await her consultation with her neurologist to rule out any physical causes (i.e.a mini stroke) and if she gets the all clear then you could work on the neurological ones. It could be that she is extremely anxious about the outcome of her exams and fears letting people down. If youd like to report more once you have further information then Im sure well be able to help.

Thanks to the respondents. I had already suggested that a consultation with a neurologist take place in the first instance and then I would be happy to address this interesting problem. It is my opinion that the exams are a contributory, if not the only, factor. At the time of writing the family are awaiting an appointment. Any other advice would be welcomed. Angela.

here is a though. Once you receive neurologist reports back as no physical problems, regress your client back to a time when she was reading normal. Once this is confirmed that she can recall or visit such an instance have her open her eyes on the count of three and read the page (Prepared just for her) ALL.... IS.... WELLLLLLL. If she can you are on your way to an esy fix. If not, regress back to where she was reading correctly and slowly progress to determine what could have caused such a block. I know this is short and many other things to concider. Good luck
