I have a potential client who wants hypnosis to rid her of a phobia but she is very anxious about the process. I spoke to her at length in an effort to reassure her. She was not reassured. She looked at my web site and trawled the internet. I asked a previous client to explain the process etc to her and she did - for an hour. Now she is concerned that she will not be able to drive home afterwards but she says she is still desperate to have hypnosis because the phobia is beginning to upset her family. I have suggested that I make her a CD to play at home but, no, she wants to come and have a session. I am getting a really bad feeling about this lady and considering not seeing her.
What would somebody else do in this case? Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Hi Shay
You dont mention what your potential clients phobia is, however your message comes across as that she is seeking therapy to appease her family. Maybe she would then be able to say well, I tried this and it didnt work? A previous client has spent an hour reassuring her yet she is still worried? I think I would go with my instinct, however it would be interesting to hear what other Hypnotherapists would do.

I was going to add my suggestions but just noticed that your question was posted in December! I would love to know the outcome.
Sue

Hi Sue
It doesnt matter how long ago messages were posted as these problems are bound to crop up at some point for other hypnotherapists and we can all learn by sharing our approaches. Perhaps Shay could let us know what the outcome was?

Try telling your client that she can hypnotise/relax herself and that you can show her how she can do this. This way she should feel more in control of the process. I wouldnt do any deeper work on the first or maybe even the second session she needs to gain her confidence with you and herself.

I have used simple Relaxation - not hypnosis - scripts to demonstrate to the client how hypnosis feels. Once they are willing to try this - eyes open, progressive relaxation - it usually reassures them. Gradually, we worked up to actual hypnosis, and it was very effective. I gave the client a lot of control as far as what step s/he was ready for next. Im wondering though, about your client. It seems as though shes not ready to make the commitment to do what she needs to do to overcome her phobia. Shes afraid to trust herself, and refusing to believe hypnosis can help her. If she doesnt try, she cant fail, so to speak. It sounds as though youve done all you could to educate her and reassure her. The ball is in her court. Oh, you may have already done this, but I make a point to tell the client that I do the same thing with everyone, and whether or not they become hypnotized is up to each individual. Its not about me, its about them.

Perhaps exlore with this client how life will be without the phobia, how she sees her life will change, how she sees her family life changing. Maybe shes holding on to it for a reason. Perhaps she knows hypnotherapy will get rid of it but maybe shes more scared to let it go.
