I was wondering if anyone can help... I have a young teenage client who has Aspergers Syndrome and would like to lose weight. They have a tremendous dislike of any fruit or vegetables - the only vegetable they will eat is potato. In the past, being around someone eating fruit or veg would make my client physically sick and so too would the thought of having to eat fruit or veg, they have now passed this stage however feel extremely uncomfortable when in the vicinity of fruit or veg. He has asked if I can help him lose weight but stressed several times that he doesnt want vegetables! When I asked him why he wanted to lose weight his reply was that he wants to be really active and healthy...but no vegetables or fruit!! (Obviously his parents would like him to eat fruit and veg... <p>I have never dealt with a teenager who has Aspergers Syndrome and hope that someone has got some opinions and advice regarding recommended inductions, deepeners and weight loss programs! (Suitable for him) I appreciate that I may be asking a lot, but have spent a lot of time with his parents (both did a weight loss course) and himself trying to build up his trust, getting to know him etc. He appears to be quite a factual character (favourite programmes are on the lines of Mythbusters and Most Haunted, likes to go on bike rides, not skateboarding as he feels he doesnt have good enough balance...)He tended to be quite non committal and vague when I asked certain questions ie. If you went on a magical ride where would you go? He responded everywhere... If I had a magic wand, what would you like me to do for you? His response was to buy him lots of Bionicles and to help him lose weight. Eye contact was often lost, yet after our initial meeting he told his mum that he was looking forward to working with me and that I was a nice lady!! We are having our first session quite soon (at his request) and I would like some sure fire pointers to help me to keep his faith and trust in myself as I am not too certain upon his level of cooperation and feel a little lost as to where to start with him. He is such a lovely young lad that I want to help him as much as I can!! I will be so grateful of any input, advice and so on!

If your client is adamant that he doesnt want to eat fruit or vegetables then it would probably be best to respect his wishes and use a different approach. I know people who never touch either and are still fit and healthy (and very slim). <p>Perhaps he would respond well if you were to concentrate on suggestions for different types of exercise, especially as he says he wants to be active? There are scripts on the site under the Sport heading that might help. <p>

As a parent of a child with Asperger Syndrome I know that one of the characteristics of the syndrome is being hypersensitive to specific things like food and certain materials on clothes, although each person is an individual and it may not be like this for all. I would agree with Faith in this case and would also caution that people with Aspergers are very literal, everything is black and white no grey areas!! Therefore they are unlikely to work well with metaphors so any scripts should be kept simple and straight to the point. Also another characteristic is the auditory processing difficulties too much information, too quickly can cause immense stress for some individuals such as my son. I would say a script which is straight to the point and repetitive would be better than one with too much information and jargon. Hope this helps for anybody in the future. Incidently I have found that hypnosis has worked well with stress which is related to Aspergers Syndrome too.
