Hello, a client of mine (a very friendly and quiet older gent) suffers from chronic tinnitis. A very loud whooshing noise as described by him.

I induced him, lightly deepened and then intervened with a visualise the sound as an object type of suggestion. Wherein he can then start to move the object away from him and thus cause the sound to diminish.

He was able to visualise the sound as a circle in front of him but he had no luck in getting the circle to move away from him and as such the sound remained as loud.

Has anyone dealt with tinnitis before and could they offer any solutions they may have tried, or suggest any new approaches I may try.

Would taking him to a deeper level of relaxation help maybe, or do I concentrate for a longer period in having him try to move this object (at the risk of him becoming frustrated)?

Any help would be greatly received.

Thanks guys and girls.

Richard Scott

Hi Richard

I had a client suffering from this problem and after our first session she reported significant diminishing effects in her tinnitus. However the problem recurred and she was later diagnosed as having a serious hearing problem and was given 2 hearing aids.

There were issues with this clients problem which I did try to address to the best of my ability at the time. The main one was that after just 3 weeks of marriage her husband died (in their bed) - he was the only person that she claimed to have loved. Im pretty sure that her tinnitus developed as a psychosomatic response to her inability to tune into her husbands danger signals. The problem that I now see her for is weight loss. She made a promise to her husband on his death bed (in her mind) that she would never love anyone else and her way of fulfilling this promise was to become overweight (perhaps protecting herself from being enticed into another relationship)

Am still working on this issue.

Many thanks Faith,
my client worked at some steel works and has developed the tinnitus over time at these steel works, and so Im not quite sure there are psychosomatic issues involved. He seems a very level-headed chap, nothing outwardly symptomatic except this tinnitus.
This is why I wondered if my method is the best approach - if the cause appears to be external.

Hi Richard
I think its unlikely that hypnotherapy will cure his tinnitis if his problem his physical rather than psychosomatic, however it might well help him to cope better with the symptoms. Perhaps other therapists have worked in this area/ If so wed love to hear from you.
