Does anyone have experience of working with a client who has ulcerative colitis - and their long-term management of the condition? I have an ex-client whose son has been diagnosed - currently in hospital and not yet responding to treatment. She feels that he is heading for surgery, and has heard that hypnotherapy could be of help afterwards. It is not something of which I have any experience - comments, ideas would be much appreciated.

Hi Dee how are you....I have only recently qualified as a CBT Hypnotherapist...and while I have had no direct experience working with someone with this condition...I can say that hypnotherapy would be a very powerful too to help with this. I also know somebody who has had this condition, she is now fully qualified in homoeopathy and has been managing this condition successfully through homoeopathy, without having to use steroids anymore. If you would like more information you can call me on 087 4176219

Hi Carol / Dee I can honestly say from personal experiance that hypnotherapy is a wornderful tool in managing both UC and Crohns. As a sufferer who has had to have a total colectomy (before I qualified as a hypnotherapist) I am pleased to inform you both that it is one of tghe best ways of managing my ongoing condition and relaxation is much the best answer to these types of debilitating disease. Your scripts should evolve around the themes of standard pain relief but with a concentration upon the way in which IBS affects people. Its good to see therapists who are not afraid to take on these nasty conditions and help sufferers - my very best wishes are with you both. Steve

Greetings, Steve is right, relaxation and pain relief. Also I have a script on this site Calm, I think it is still here, Faith would know if you cant find it. This script is good for a wide range of things including letting go of anxiety, and givinh importance to the problem. It is also a good thing to get them to stop giving lots of energy to their worries about the condition. Imagery using different colours can be effective. Also reducing inflamation / managing inflamation and the pain is vital. I have worked with GI disorders for years and have found a structured approach is the way to satisfactory outcomes. Hope this helps. Mike

Hi Dee, If you want to gain more experience in dealing with clients with IBD/IBS I can thoroughly recommend Mike Mahoneys IBS workshop (if he still does them). I attended the workshop a few years ago and its very informative and you get copies of the full programme that you can adapt. I also suffer from Crohns (42 years since diagnosis) and had surgery last year, its also good to give the client a relaxation session that they can use for just after surgery to help them relax and deal better with the pain, it worked well for me and will do again next week when I have more surgery.

Two ideas: 1. Ozone therapy is very good for disorders of the colon. Widely available in Germany (hard to get here, in US), rectal ozone is said to be incredibly effective in healing the colon. 2. A client who had to go off all pain medication prior to surgery for Crohns responded well to glove anaesthesia. She said it worked as well as the medication. Her condition went into some level of remission as long as she did not smoke. I hope this helps!
