Hi all I am not sure which script would help me, but i have a problem where i am scared to swim. Its not that i have a fear of water, i have a fear of letting go of safety when i am in water. I went for lessons and my tutor told me that i was a fantastic swimmer, if only she could let me go. I am fine until i know that i am alone. Nothing stops me from panicking when the water goes above my waist. What script would benefit me? Thanks

Hi Maria I wonder if you had any bad experiences when swimming in the past? If so this could account for the panic. I think you need to recognize exactly what it is that is making you panic and then try to break down the process into stages and conquer each one at a time. For example, can you immerse your head under water? If not then try a step at a time - first with your mouth - then your nose and ears (wear some goggles if that helps). We have a couple of scripts on Hypnotic World for the Fear of Swimming but having recently overcome my own swimming fear I will most likely be writing another one loosely based on the strategies that worked for me. If you want to email me through the contact form on Hypnotic World then we can discuss this further.

Hi Maria, I wonder if youve already been successful in overcoming your fear of swimming. You didnt say if there was a time you can remember when you werent fearful. One of the reasons Freud gave up on hypnotherapy was that the problems used to come back, and he wasnt very good at it either. He wanted to suggest away any problem. For example, I am going to count from one to three and you will no longer be afraid of swimming. He also found that the fear might manifest itself somewhere else. The trouble with Freud was that he didnt believe that our problems often come from trauma, rather that everything was connected to sexual repression. So, although it would be nice to overcome our problems with suggestion alone, some issues arise from unconnected issues from the past and are compounded to the point where it manifests itself as a fear of something else, like swimming. So my suggestion to you is to find a therapist you trust and work with them to find the cause of your fear, perhaps by age regression to cause, and take the appropriate action based on what you discover.

I have been a swimming instructor and coach for 25+ years. I think that much fear of swimming is related to a fear of falling. I say this because I have dealt with many student who after getting past the water adjustment (putting their head under water ) they can not bring themselve to take their feet off the bottom of the pool and floating. The deeper the water the worse the fear. I can imagine that for some it is hard to believe that water actually holds you up. So maybe check into that possibility.
