A man with a great deal of problems needs help

I have a client who says that her son - who is in his 40s in very over weight and would like to have the gastric band hypnotherapy. However, this man has a lot of problems. I can see why he is over weight as he has many issues and turns to food for comfort. I am unsure if i should be helping him with hypnosis as he has heart failure, many other physical health problems, but is also a very troubled man. He has suffered with clinical depression, got himself into serious debt because he was buying items, not that he wanted these things but he loved the thrill of packages being delivered, and also he used to self harm. His mum said he is dealing with his problems and is over the worst, its just his comfort eating which is the problem. I am unsure and could do with a bit of advice. Thanks in advance.

Hi Maria Sorry for the delay in responding to this, however it might be a good idea to speak to your clients son before making any decisions on whether to treat him or not. You need to discover how motivated he is to tackling his problems. As he has so many issues it might be a good idea to have at least one session where he can just talk freely about how he feels and what he thinks has contributed to his comfort eating, depression, etc. Only when you have the heard his side of the story can you make a balanced decision.
