Im beginning to take the International Academy of Hypnotherapy course, and have purchased my first module. Prior to taking this step, Ive read books by Yapko, Bandler/Grinder, Kelly/Kelly, even Chase. This is something I have been interested in for years. Im a very confident man (some would say too much so), but I find myself with an incredible amount of self-doubt when it comes to the thought of my first induction, and whether Ill be successful at it. How does one get over the anxiety of their first induction? Were you unsure of yourself? Were you hesitant that hey, it might just not work? Could you shed some light on the subject from your point of view, in your experience? Thanks in advance.

It is very much like learning to ride a bicycle. You just get on (begin doing the inductions) and before long you are speeding along like you have been doing it for days, then months and then years. You will have a few spills and falls, but just remember baby steps is where we all begin. You will do fine with practice!

Hi Cameron, I see Hugh has already posted a response and he is absolutely right. Let your confidence in the rest of your life spill over into your hypnosis. Total confidence is what your client must see. Your pre-talk is absolutely vital. Explaining away any of the common misconceptions about hypnosis and instilling confidence in your abilities as a therapist. Is your course a distance learning course or is it based in a college or some other establishment? You should have a mentor. He/She will give you support maybe even let you sit in on some of their sessions. Join linkedin.com and sign up for a few of the hypnotherapy groups. two worth mentioning are the NGH (national guild of hypnotists) and Clinical Hypnotherapy groups. Both have no membership requirements. You will get great information and help there from fellow professionals. If you are based in the UK and want to chat about some of the issues you come across email me on info@hyppnotichelp.co.uk I will give you my number and arrange to chat. Good luck as you embark on a really interesting journey. Regards Steve

Thank you to the both of you for your kind and reassuring words. Since Ive posted this message, I received my first module of the course offered here which also reassured me that as the course progresses, I should be completely cofortable with induction techniques. This is all so exciting, and Im not overwhelmed by the learning curve, which I see as a positive. Im just... realising that this is not the sort of thing one just jumps into. I want to make sure that the timing is right, and that I do it responsibly and safely.
