Hi All, Just wondering what other therapists favourite methods are for helping clients lower anxiety and/or stress in general. Or perhaps it might be better to instead mention what your most effective methods are. Regards!

Hi Kath: I see a lot of people with anxiety, the first thing I do is to teach them proper breathing from their stomach, so they dont hyperventilate and push themselves into a panic attack I start off my session with this - breathing in to the count of four through your nose and let your tummy rise, and breathing out a little longer through your mouth. I find this is very important. I then talk about negative thoughts - such as I am going to feel anxious again and work on that with hypnosis take them to their special place and work on seeing themselves in those anxious provoking circumstances, calm and relaxed. There is much more in a session, but that is the start of it. kind regards lyta

Hi Kath, Go for IMRs then talk direst to SC and ask it why it feels the neccessity to create the anxiety. If it doesnt speak then try open suggestion. Changework then follows. Regards, Bob

Hi Kathleen, I specialize in anxiety after curing my own GAD/PTSD with hypnosis. I like to find out the factors as to why the client has anxiety. There are maintaining causes like caffeine for example, there are genetic predispositions, and there are also environmental reasons for anxiety which can be learned and/or caused by trauma, and life experiences. Finding out the root cause is really important to knowing which direction to go with a client. Many times it's a combination of things that lock a client in anxiety which manifests itself in a diagnosis of GAD(general anxiety disorder.) If a client has PTSD or flashbacks most of the time it is the subconscious mind trying to deal with traumatic experience of some kind. Another important factor of success is helping the client see themselves in a new way, therefore having the tools to control how they feel is really important. I also use yogic breathing techniques and suggest yoga, daily mediation and journaling afterwards to assist them in connecting to the very deepest part of themselves.
